The new Mazda3 showcases a styling direction that will eventually spread to the entire Mazda lineup, Laurens van den Acker, Mazda’s design chief has said.

mazda 3 2010

The powertrains combine Mazda’s typical Zoom-Zoom driving experience with excellent environmental performance to provide exhilarating driving. They transmit just the right amount of G force that perfectly matches the vehicle’s actual acceleration. This provides the driver with a more refined experience of oneness with the car. The new engine line up has been tailored for European customers and now includes the newly developed MZR-CD 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine, carried over from the all-new Mazda 6, in addition to the MZR-1.6-litre and 2.0-litre gasoline engines and the MZ-CD 1.6-litre turbo diesel. It is a high-performance clean diesel engine with top class output, fuel economy and quietness. The MZR-CD 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine will be offered in two variants: a high power version with a maximum torque of 400 Nm/1,800-3,000 rpm and a maximum output of 136 kW (185 PS)/3500 rpm, and a standard power version with a maximum torque of 360 Nm/1,800-2,600 rpm and a maximum output of 110 kW (150 PS)/3500 rpm. Both versions have outstanding clean emissions performance, comply with the Euro Stage 5 regulations and feature a Mazda developed unique Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) technology for more efficient regeneration. Fuel economy is also greatly improved by 7 to 10 percent compared to the MZR-CD 2.0-litre engine equipped in the existing model, attaining 5.4 l/100 km for the standard power version and 5.6 l/100 km for the high power version.

The Good

1) Looks different from the same category.
2) Fine handling.
3) Well-finished cabin.

The Bad

1) Too firm ride.
2) Some road noise infiltrates cabin.

2011 Mazda RX-7

The expected on-sale date of the new-generation rotary car is 2010 to 2011.

Behind closed doors, far from the public’s eye, an anonymous source at Mazda revealed to one of our spies in Japan that there will be another rotary-engine car coming from the Hiroshima-based company. It’s still early, but a team is being assembled as you read this to produce such a car. The basis for the future car — we have yet to confirm if it will be called the RX-7 — is the 16X rotary engine, unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show last year. The 16X is an all-new Wankel — an evolution of the Renesis 13B powerplant in the RX-8 — with a revised eccentric shaft designed to produce more low-end torque. While Mazda hasn’t published horsepower figures yet, we hear it’s in the neighborhood of 200–250 bhp.

Because of the increase in torque, there probably won’t be a turbocharged version of the 16X, at least not in the beginning. But our source went on to say that Mazda is still experimenting with forced induction. So, our first glimpse of the 16X will not be in a pure high-performance sports car like the last RX-7, discontinued more than a decade ago in the U.S., but rather something along the lines of the original RX-7 — an affordable, user-friendly sports car that was nimble and fun to drive.

Does this mean that the RX-8’s days are numbered? Probably so. It’s hard to imagine a small company like Mazda with two rotary cars in its lineup. It’s also hard to imagine such a company having two 2-seat sports cars unless its name happens to be Lamborghini or Lotus

With the MX-5 firmly established in Mazda’s lineup, the new rotary-powered car will most likely be a 2+2 with distinct sports-car styling. That it will be built on an extended MX-5 platform is a given, which means it will share the dimensions and proportions of the Kabura concept car. Expect upper-and-lower A-arm suspension systems at both ends, as well as a low curb weight, something south of the 3000-lb. mark.

The expected on-sale date of the new-generation rotary car is 2010 to 2011, according to our source. Price? It’s still too early to say, but Mazda’s aim is to bring it in under $30,000.

The rumormill just can’t stop churning out stories of an impending Mazda RX-7 revival. We’ve been hearing that we should expect the rotary-powered sports car any day now… for the last few years. It’s still yet to show its smiling face. Still, here we are with another report indicating that the next RX-7 is just around the corner, this time as a 2011 or 2012 model.

Inside Line reports that the birth of the two-seat Mazda RX-7 will mean the death of the current four-door, four-seat RX-8 that’s been in circulation since 2004. Furthermore, the gang in Santa Monica says that next-gen rotary sportscar may not up the performance ante of either the last twin-turbo RX-7 or even the current RX-8’s 1.3-liter 232-horsepower Renesis engine. This, despite earlier rumors that the latest 1.6-liter 16X powerplant was kicking out as much as 350 horses while still achieving superior fuel economy over its forebears.

Mazda could instead return to the ethos of the first RX-7 from 1979, fielding a lightweight two-seater powered by a new version of the Wankel producing somewhere between 200 and 250 horsepower. If true, we can expect the next RX-7 to cost somewhere around $25,000 and be positioned against cars like the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the upcoming RWD Toyota/Subaru.

With the introduction of the Demio by Mazda it has grown in popularity in many countries. In 1996, after the redesign and modifications, Mazda came up with a tall hatchback type model. This even resembled a smallish mini van. The Mazda Demio surprised everyone when it hit the market place for the first time. It was a smashing success in its naïve Japan , producing some very impressive sales numbers. The brand new design of the Demio in 1996 used the DW platform for its production model. It’s sold under the nameplates of the 121 outside Japan , and Metro in the Australian market.

Mazda Demio cars are equipped with powerful engines and it is designed for fuel economies and to be environmentally friendly. The new Mazda Demio incorporated a redesigned exterior and also a cabin air filtration system that were done in 2000. They also returned to and automatic transmission, which proved to be more popular then the standard or manual variety. The original model under the DW platform was manufactured in Mazda’s Columbian facilities. In 2002 the Demio was remade based on the DY platform and while the Demio name was still used through out Japan , it was known as the Mazda2 in the rest of the world.

The Demio comes with four-speed automatic, a five-speed manual and a seven speed selective CVT transmissions. Along with the newly named Mazda2, the Demio became widely recognized as a very fun and also extremely practical car to drive. This helped Mazda elevate its Japanese domestic sale to seventh place. All these new Demios come complete with ABS (anti-locking braking system) and a unique stability control system was an added option. Mazda also offered the Demio in a hybrid version that incorporated an electric engine at the back to provide power to the rear wheels when the front ones began to spin. This added option did give the Demio added traction and control.

The Mazda MX-5 is one of the most popular roadster sports cars in the world (including the USA ’s Miata namesake). Mazda MX-5 famous around the world as a lightweight, open top, two seat sports car has set a new record as total production of the roadster reaches 800,000 units. The Mazda MX-5 is currently in its third generation and enjoying a consistent and fully deserved level of popularity. But what keeps dragging the consumers in is the unbelievably low price. For less than £20,000 you can own a fully functional, stylish looking and high performing sports car. Best of all, you won’t get the jeering masses pointing at you as you drive through the town centres, accusing you of having some kind of breakdown. The question is; how does the sporty Mazda manage to be both cheap, mock-proof and maintain its value in the used car market?

The answer is slightly depressing to the prospective Mazda MX-5 owner, but true nonetheless. More than a few people have cottoned on to the benefits of owning a Mazda MX-5. Mazda is once again reapplying with the Guinness organization to have its record updated as its cumulative production reaches 800,000 units. The Mazda represents the meeting point between dreams and reality for a lot of drivers. It is achievable but not disappointing, which is probably the best that the largest proportion of the population can hope for in driving terms.

Last August 2006, Mazda has added the Power Retractable Hard Top model to the Roadster line-up. In terms of performance, the Mazda MX-5 really states its case for being the world’s most popular sports car. It is one of the lowest cost cars you will be able to get rear wheel drive in and with the 0-60 of slightly over 7 seconds, you are looking at car with pretty serious power. In a car of this size, that amount of torque can feel as though you have a rocket strapped to your back when you put your foot down. It would be foolish to state that the Mazda MX-5 is the dream car for the sporty drivers amongst us. I think everyone would prefer a Porsche 911 or a Ferrari 599, but for the money you pay, the Mazda is a heck of a car!
